My journey as a Tarot consultant started back in High School with my first Tarot deck. Purchased from a local bookshop/metaphysical store we had in town, it was the standard Rider-Waite deck and came with a full-size paperback book. I had no idea what I was doing, but I started reading for people at school. Before classes, we sat on the floor by our lockers and talk or finish homework. I pulled out my cards and would get a circle around me pretty fast.
With none of the cards memorized, I looked up the card meanings and just intuitively put the readings together. The Celtic Cross was the only spread I knew at the time, so that is what I used. It was messy, it was fun, but it was pretty shallow. I treated the Tarot rather as a fortune-telling game and did not see myself as a Tarot consultant at all.
As a geek girl I ran with what I’d call the second-level group; some of my friends were runners or played basketball, most were brainy, and for the most part, we were just nice, non-smoking, rule-abiding girls. Above us were the popular kids and below us the real nerds, who we sometimes hung with as well.
To my surprise, the popular girls wanted readings most often, so I obliged, mostly out of self-interest. If I refused they could be pretty nasty to deal with. There was quite a stir about it because more often than not I was spot on. In fact, my last reading was so spot-on, though it confused me, I was reported to school admin and was told, very nicely, not to bring the cards to school anymore.
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the reading was about some abuse the girl was experiencing at home. I’d assumed it was just some clique-ish drama involving boyfriends and rumors, but it was a lot more serious. After that, I was ignored by the popular kids and the religious ones rather exaggeratedly avoided me in the halls.
I read exclusively for myself after that, got heavily into the new age scene in college, and then after graduation did a complete about-face and became a skeptic. With marriage to a skeptic and many, many moves, I lost track of my original tarot cards. Packed in a box somewhere, I suppose. Over the next twenty-six years, I worked as a paralegal, a controller in charge of accounts receivable, payable, and human resources for a mid-size company, and then as a freelance programmer.
Becoming a Professional Tarot Consultant
This brings us to the pandemic year (hopefully just a year). Between January and May of 2020, I went into a deep depression and got almost nothing done. My work as a freelance programmer dried up. I took up watercolor painting, but couldn’t sustain my interest. Gradually I started revisiting my spiritual beliefs, bought myself a new tarot deck, and started reading for myself.
I started doing some shadow work. Shadow work consists of working on the parts of yourself that remain hidden, your fears, guilty pleasures, deep desires. For the first time in a very long time, I felt like I had a handle on my life. An understanding of who I was began to develop and I released a lot of old guilt and shame. The depression eased substantially. My free-floating anxiety disappeared for the most part.
While my programming work picked up a little bit, I decided to work towards becoming a professional Tarot consultant. I prefer the term “Tarot consultant” rather than “Tarot reader” because it has the connotation of working with clients rather than just performing one-off readings like a sideshow act.
Looking around, I found a lot of online classes, but most didn’t really show the professionalism I was looking for. Then I found BiddyTarot.com. Brigit Esselmont has put together a great set of classes, community, and certification intended to promote professionalism in the Tarot community. I especially liked her emphasis on ethical reading. The certification process is fairly involved and I hope to have it completed by the Spring of 2021.
Looking Forward as a Tarot Consultant
Here at the beginning of 2021, I feel I’m in a good spot. I’m working on a course covering the Minor Arcana which will be offered later this year. My client list is building and I’m getting some very good reviews. Most of all I feel good about myself, my new career, and life in general again. I read for myself daily and have found a new positive attitude and focus on gratitude I lacked before.
Looking forward I plan on adding group tarot sessions, where 3-4 people with similar issues (family, career, etc) meet regularly for readings and discussion. A Major Arcana class will also be added, as well as some more custom readings like my New Moon readings. And, of course, I will always be available for one-on-one Tarot consultations.
What People Say About me as a Tarot Consultant
I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.
Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
This reading has definitely inspired me to keep moving forward and taking appropriate action. The information in the reading was very thorough and insightful and gives me hope that with some hard work I could build a thriving business that fulfills me on all levels.
What I most valued or appreciated about this reading is … The speed in delivery, the warmth of the reading, and the effort and involvement that Diane put into it!!!”
She’s pretty clear and to the point, I like that so I’m good with it.
I liked the spread because it gave a lot of information. I also liked the intuition part about the online dating site, because actually I met someone on a site right before the question was answered.
This reading really resonates more than what Diane realizes. There are additional things going on in our lives right now which sit completely with these cards. The helper and the path forward really do help to light up a bit of hope and light at the end of the tunnel.
I really appreciated how quickly Diane picked this reading up, sent me messages, the help is re-writing the question and the thought behind the reading. Thank you for this. The reading gave me a lot of insight into my situation, was extremely helpful to me and provided a lot of value! I would absolutely recommend you as a Tarot Reader to others!
This reading opened my eyes to the problem of me still dwelling in the past. I’m gonna push forward and keep going and focus on myself.
I think the reading is definitely actionable…I feel more at ease and also there is a lot more trust towards myself after reading the reading. I really appreciated your introduction of what your approach is toward tarot. That made it even more guiding…Also, I really liked how you build up the reading, the explanations of the cards, the reading, and the conclusion. Overall, I feel lucky to get my reading from you. I feel you have a lot of experience and also have a lot of empathy for me. Thank you very much!
