“Seek Mastery” is the phrase that first came to mind when I viewed this spread. Never say the Tarot isn’t funny, because today’s spread made me laugh. Take a look at how the King of Cups is eyeing the Six of Cups!
Seek Mastery of Emotions
We all run into situations where our emotions run high. The King of Cups tells us to seek to master our emotions not by denying them, but by acknowledging them. Small children are just learning how to deal with their emotions. When their feelings are just too much to handle, a temper tantrum usually erupts. What is understandable in a child is reprehensible in an adult. By the time we’ve reached our later teenage years, we should be able to acknowledge our feelings without lashing out at people and things around us. The King of Cups reminds us to practice emotional maturity.
Seek Mastery Over Temptation
The next card is the Six of Cups. In a classic Rider-Waite-Smith deck this card depicts a child or children, sometimes being given a cup as a gift. The classic keywords are memories, childhood, and nostalgia. But in this deck, the Six of Cups gives a different impression. The figure in the waterfall, between the stacked basin, is nude and holds an apple.
The feeling is one of temptation, but this is an emotional temptation. Maybe it is your habit of constantly reliving the past, remembering it either as better or much worse than it really was. The King of Cup’s gaze clinches it for me. He’s looking, but not acting and telling us to seek mastery over our emotions by acknowledging (and perhaps admiring) temptations, but refusing to be moved by them.
Seek Mastery Over the Future
We can rewrite the past all we want, but the future is still unfolding. To seek mastery over the future you have to let the past go. Look at it fondly, but be like the King of Pentacles and focus on what is ahead rather than the past.
Again the platter from which the King dumps gold draws me in. It is etched with a map of the world, indicating that the surrounding riches come from everywhere. Don’t limit your sphere of influence, because you never know what will provide a larger-than-expected return.
Seek Mastery Action Steps
For me, it is a reminder to look at those flashes of annoyance, anger, or frustration and really understand the source. Don’t give into the luxurious temptation of a temper tantrum; you’re an adult and should know how to control your emotions by now. Focus on the future, your goals, and the bigger picture.
What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot
I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.
Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
