Tarot consultants are everywhere. There are thousands online, from the “Get a Reading for $1” folks on Etsy to consultants who charge hundreds of dollars. Choosing the right consultant will make all the difference in the results of your reading. Here are five things to think about when looking at Tarot consultants.

What Kind of Tarot Consultant Are They?

I lump people who read Tarot cards for profit into three groups: consultants, readers, and fortune tellers.

Tarot Consultants

Tarot ConsultantI call myself a Tarot consultant because I don’t simply read the cards. Instead, I work with clients to drill down to the real issue. Most clients approach me with Yes/No questions or questions that will result in non-specific answers. I work with clients to really figure out what they need to know. For example, “When will I find my perfect partner” might result in an answer of “more than 2 years” or “after you are financially secure”. Neither answer is very useful, so we work together to craft a question that provides some actions the client can take to achieve their goal of being in a long-term relationship. “What do I need to work on personally in order to attract my perfect partner” or “What are the qualities I should look for in a perfect partner” are much better questions because they give the client something to do after the reading.

Tarot Readers

Tarot reads will just take your question (and money) and do the reading. No conversation, no further explanation, and no follow-up. (Hint: the majority of those Etsy readers are like this. How do I know? I tested them.) Their reading are usually short and general, and because they are general they can seem accurate.

Fortune Tellers

Tarot ConsultantThese are the scam artists of the Tarot field and you can find quite a few of these on Etsy as well. These may seem like Tarot Readers but they suck you in, try to sell you “solutions” such as charms or amulets, and will generally try to keep in contact with you to grift more money from you. Their readings are usually gloomy with options to fix your dire future through spending more money.

How Do You Receive the Reading?

I do the majority of my readings by email and usually we never even talk by Zoom or phone. Sometimes, if I feel the client isn’t understanding something or I feel it is easier, I’ll talk to a client on the phone just to help get some background and help craft their question, but this is rare.  Email readings are nice because I can spend time crafting my reading and looking up resources or information that the client might find useful. For the client, they receive a written reading of 3-10 pages, complete with card images and all information I think the client might need to move forward. The client can take the time to refer to the reading at their leisure.

Let me be clear, live readings are great. You can ask questions as the reading develops, which is helpful, and the consultant can confirm the cards as they go along. When I get a live reading I like to use my phone to record it (with permission, of course!) so that I can go back later and refresh my memory. The downside is that live consultants charge by time, so if you spend too much time chatting or getting the consultant up to speed, you’ll find the reading cut short.

Is the Tarot Consultant Willing to Help You Craft Your Question?

Tarot Consultant The question is everything in Tarot. The cards can sometimes be extremely literal and will answer the question very bluntly in a way that isn’t helpful at all. I recently did readings for a client where the questions were fairly non-specific and both she and I felt the answers were totally off-base. When we narrowed down each question to be more specific, the answers turned out to be spot-on. These readings were for a friend that I read for a lot, so I didn’t police the questions the first time as well as I should have. Lazy questions result in lazy answers!

In an email reading the client and I usually correspond 2-3 times before coming up with a question that I feel will give the client an answer they can use.

What Follow-Up Does The Tarot Consultant Offer?

Tarot ConsultantAfter contemplating your reading for a few days you will have questions. Is the consultant open to answering those questions? In my practice, I will answer questions about the reading and its interpretation, but I don’t usually pull additional cards or provide a second card pull for free. Asking “what did you mean by this…” is fine.  Asking a follow-up question such as “You said a career path in finance is likely. Would an accounting degree or a business degree be better?” would require a second reading.

Some live readers allow any number of questions and card pulls in a reading within the time you’ve paid for. Ask ahead of time so you know what is and isn’t included in the reading. Ask if you can contact them about any questions you might have about the reading at a later point. Do remember though, the questions should be limited to the reading you received and not involve additional card pulls or spreads, unless you want to pay for them!

Do You Click With the Tarot Consultant?

Talk a look at your pre-reading conversations with the consultant. Do you feel comfortable with how they communicated? Are they understanding your question? Trust your instincts and gut feelings. If you are unsure, find a different consultant.

Tarot ConsultantI don’t take it personally when a potential client chooses not to work with me. I feel that if there is conflict or unease the reading won’t go well. On my part, I’ve done well over 400 readings. Looking back, there are some clients I should have refused to read for. The biggest flag for me is ignoring my suggestions to modify their question in order to get a better result.

It is harder if you are in a live reading. Depending on your personality you might need to suck it up and get the reading, but if you are more direct just tell the reader it isn’t working out and ask for a refund. Keep in mind this should be done before any actual cards are drawn. Once the cards are drawn, you’ve “bought” the product.

What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot

I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.

Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.

Informative. I didn’t know there were such things as consultants that did more than simple readings. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your insights on the different types of Tarot consultants out there. It’s important to be aware of the difference between a true consultant and someone who is just looking to make a quick buck. I also appreciate the advice on how to receive a reading and the importance of crafting a specific question. It’s clear that a Tarot reading can be much more useful and accurate when the right approach is taken. I’ll definitely keep these points in mind when looking for a Tarot consultant in the future.

I know nothing about tarot but this was interesting, learning about the depth you can receive from a consultant. I have seen many of the “readers” on TikTok, which for them is probably an advantage – they charge and can give vague answers yet look legit.
