There are many fallacies about Tarot cards and reading Tarot. In this article, we’ll talk about your first Tarot deck.

Does My First Tarot Deck Have to Be Gifted To Me?

Your First Tarot DeckI’d never heard of this “tradition” until about two years ago. Apparently, some people say that you should never buy your own deck, but it should be gifted to you. This is ridiculous.

Tarot cards are a tool. If you are gifted with a deck, congratulations, but you can buy your own deck(s) freely. They don’t gain anything special by being a gift, so don’t hang around waiting for your first tarot deck to be gifted to you – go out and buy it for yourself!

Your First Tarot Deck Must Be Carefully Blessed in Order to Work.

First Tarot Deck BlessingNope, no more than your first car, your first peppermint mocha, or your first pen needed blessings.  Again, a Tarot deck is just a tool and your first Tarot deck doesn’t need any special rite or unboxing ritual for it to work.  The only “ritual” I do with my cards occurs after an intense reading. Sometimes the cards feel “sticky” – a mental sensation rather than a physical one.  When this happens I might burn some incense and smoke the cards or set the deck in the bowl where I keep some crystals and rocks I love. By not using the deck for a few days it generally clears itself out.

To be clear – the issue isn’t with the cards! It is more with your own mental attitude. A bad or intense reading may have a mental effect on your ability to use a deck for a while. This is why it is a good idea to own more than one deck as if you needed a reason!

You Have To Get To Know Your First Tarot Deck

Your First TArot Deck

Inversion Tarot

This one is true and is true for any and all Tarot decks you might want to use, including your first tarot deck. I never use a new deck to read for clients because there is a learning curve with each deck. The symbols are different and each deck reads a different way.

Get to know your first Tarot deck (or any Tarot deck), by looking at each card without the book. If you have experience with Tarot cards you will likely notice standard symbolism: roses, animals, the moon, etc. Shuffle up the cards well and look at each again. Seeing them in order the first time through helps you see patterns and progressions. Seeing them out of order makes you look at the card more deeply. At this point, go ahead and look at the booklet that came with the deck as you look at each card. If you have a book of Tarot card meanings, look up that as well.

You Have to Memorize the Cards to Read Your First Tarot Deck

Waite-Rider-Smith DeckI had spot-on readings while looking up meanings – you definitely can use your first Tarot deck for deep and insightful readings even without memorizing the meanings. However, once you have the meanings memorized, if even just the keywords, reading the Tarot becomes easier. You can spend more time looking at the cards and less at the book. More things will jump out at you and you’ll learn to trust your intuition better.

So, What Should I Do With My First Deck?

Just work with them. While you’re watching tv in the evening, run through the deck and see if you can remember keywords for each one. When you’re comfortable with the cards, start pulling two at a time and reading them together. Do this quickly and don’t worry if you draw a blank, just state what comes to you.

I have a notebook with two facing pages for each card. I hand-wrote the booklet’s meaning as well as looked up the card’s meaning on the internet. I also write down my own impressions, what the card looks like to me, what images stand out, and how the card makes me feel. Do one or two cards a day and comfort will build.

What If I Don’t Click With a Deck?

I have four decks that I don’t use for client readings because I haven’t got to know them yet, and one deck that I just never clicked with. There is just a mental revulsion when I try to use the cards and they don’t render useable information when I’ve tried to use them. I just put the cards back in the box and someday I’ll probably get rid of it. The other four decks just need my attention, so I’ll hold onto them and get to know them one by one.

What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot

I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.

Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
