The Modern Witch Tarot deck by Lisa Sterle is my workhorse deck. I find it very clear, almost blunt; there is no waffling with this deck!

Published by Sterling Ethos, this deck comes in a very sturdy slipcover case with a little hardcover booklet in English only. Since only one language is in the booklet there is more room for expanded discussion or at least more discussion about each card than the Lo Scarabeo published decks have.

A Big Deck

This deck is larger than normal – 4 3/4″ x 2 13/16 – which is a problem if you have small hands as I do. It is awkward to shuffle casino-style (riffle) so I just mix them up on my desk or use the overhand style.

The card stock is very sturdy, probably the thickest of my decks, which is very nice, and the coating ensures the cards neither stick together nor slide around too much. To quote a certain blond burglar of bear houses, they are “just right”.

Modern Witch Tarot Imagery

The imagery for the Modern Witch Tarot is based strongly on the Rider-Waite decks. Because of this, I find it an excellent deck for those just starting out.

All figures in the deck are female, with a wide range of ages, skin color, and body types depicted in modern settings. Smartphones, laptops, and computers are depicted instead of books, bringing a nuance to cards like the Ten of Swords where the figure is on her smartphone, ignoring her wounds.

I highly recommend this deck, especially if you are starting out and the typical Rider-Waite decks don’t speak to you.
