My newest deck, The Spacious Tarot 2nd Edition by Carrie Mallon and Annie Ruygt, is becoming my new favorite. As the title implies, the cards have space and my intuitive mind loves it.
The Spacious Tarot Deck
The deck comes in a lovely box with a 138-page booklet. The cards are standard size, about 4-1/2 x 2-3/4, and have a matte finish. These cards are not slick at all but don’t stick together either.
The artwork is minimal and follows the Rider-Waite in feel.
That Four of Cups really caught my attention – it just has the feel of taking oneself out of the flow and just being static.
Here we have the Magician, High Priestess, and Empress cards. I’m not sure if the original artwork was done in pastels or gouache – it doesn’t look like watercolor. The Spacious Tarot cards are genuinely lovely though.
The Court Cards
Instead of the usual Page, Knight, Queen, and King, the Spacious Tarot has Child, Explorer, Guardian, and Elder. The energy of these titles makes a lot more sense to me than the classic titles. Using the royal titles connotes classism and a sense of patriarchy, while these new titles still fit the classic meanings and eliminate the gender identification as well.
Type of Readings
Because I just received The Spacious Tarot I haven’t done any readings with it. I sat down briefly with it while writing this review and I can tell right away this is going to be another clear, blunt deck for me. I’ll let you know how it plays out in reality once I incorporate it into my readings.
