Today we explore the incredible potential of tarot in overcoming one of the biggest challenges many of us face: procrastination. Whether it’s putting off important tasks, delaying personal growth, or stalling on creative projects, procrastination can hinder our progress and prevent us from reaching our full potential. However, fear not, for the wisdom of tarot can serve as a powerful catalyst to help you break free from the clutches of procrastination and embrace a more focused, productive life.

Understanding Procrastination

Before we dive into the ways tarot can help combat procrastination, let’s first understand what procrastination truly is. Psychology Today says that “Procrastination tends to reflect a person’s struggles with self-control. For habitual procrastinators, … “I don’t feel like it” comes to take precedence over their goals or responsibilities, and can set them on a downward spiral of negative emotions that further deter future effort.

Procrastination stems from a combination of factors, such as self-deception, fear of failure, lack of motivation, feeling overwhelmed, or a sense of perfectionism. It is a difficult-to-break habit, but with the right tools and mindset, you can overcome it and get moving again.

Tarot: A Gateway to Self-Reflection

Tarot is not only a means of predicting the future but also a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Tarot decks consist of 78 cards, each with its own unique symbolism and meaning. Through a tarot reading, we can gain insights into our subconscious mind, unlock hidden patterns, and reveal the underlying causes of our procrastination.

Using Tarot to Confront Procrastination

Self-Awareness

The first step towards overcoming procrastination is self-awareness. With the question “Why do I procrastinate” in mind, draw at least 3 cards from your Tarot deck. Read each card separately as it relates to the question. This should give you a good indication of what areas you need to work on to avoid procrastination. This self-awareness empowers you to address those issues head-on.

Goal Setting

Seven of Wands

Modern Witch Tarot

Tarot can assist you to set clear and meaningful goals. Start very small with one or two goals, and address each goal separately.  For each goal, ask the Tarot what you need to do first.

For example, my goal is to keep my inbox to zero and I pull the Seven of Wands.  The Seven of Wands is all about keeping on your toes and defending your position. My intuition, that quiet voice inside, tells me that I just need to focus on my inbox until it is empty.

Notice how the figure in the card is fighting off attackers? It is easier if you vanquish each one as they come forward in the attack, making sure they can’t return and attack again. This tells me that I need to address each email once and do something with it! I can answer the email, add it to my to-do list if it can’t be done in less than ten minutes, or just delete it if it isn’t relevant.

Knight of Pentacles

Modern Witch Tarot

If confused by the first card, draw a second one. With the question “How do I prioritize the work generated by email?” I drew the Knight of Pentacles. This tells me to focus on the emails that generate material rewards first.

Continue asking questions and drawing a card until you are satisfied you understand how to keep your email inbox at zero. Just keep asking questions and drawing a one-card answer.

Motivation Boost

Tarot serves as a constant source of inspiration and motivation. With a question such as “What am I already doing well?” or “What strength can I draw on to procrastinate less?”, you remind yourself what you are already good at and how you can use your current ability to tackle procrastination.

Overcoming Blocks

Tarot can help identify and dismantle the mental and emotional blocks that contribute to procrastination. My favorite spread for blocks is a 3-card spread with the positions as:

  1. What is blocking me?
  2. What can I use to overcome this? Or What will help me clear this block?
  3. How will clearing this block affect my life?

Accountability

Understand the ConsequencesUse tarot as a form of personal accountability. Perform regular readings to assess your progress, identify areas where you may be slipping back into old habits, and refocus your energy on the tasks that matter most. The cards can provide gentle reminders and guidance to keep you on track. Journaling is key here! I write down every Tarot reading I do, whether for myself or clients and look back at it periodically to see what progress I am making.

Conclusion

For self-improvement and personal growth, tarot offers a unique and transformative approach to tackling procrastination. Through self-awareness, goal setting, motivation boosting, block overcoming, and accountability, Tarot empowers you to break free from the chains of procrastination and step into a more focused, productive life. Remember, the power to overcome procrastination lies within you, and the tarot serves as a valuable tool to unlock your true potential.

What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot

I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.

Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
