The High Priestess is the facilitator between your conscious and subconscious mind. She connects you with your intuition, that little voice or feeling that nudges you to pay attention. Meditating with the High Priestess card strengthens your awareness of your intuitive, hidden self, which guides you in turn to reach your Highest Self.
The High Priestess is the third card in the Major Arcana and has the number 2 (the Fool is zero). Where the magician concerns himself with manifestation in the material world, the High Priestess is his counterpart in the interior world, the world within each of us that connects us together as humans. In more prosaic terms, the High Priestess imagery used as a tool can help you connect with all of the “stuff” you shove out of your conscious mind.
Meditating with the High Priestess
My go-to meditation for most cards is the easiest. To begin, read over the entire meditation first! Then sit in a comfortable position and draw out the High Priestess card, or look at one of the images in this post.
Examine the card carefully, taking in all of the details in the card until you envision the card with your eyes shut. With your eyes shut, imagine the card is in front of you, expanding in size until it is the size of a doorway and you can just step through, into the card.
You are now in the High Priestess’ audience chamber. Look around you. What do you see? What do you hear? Can you smell anything?
The High Priestess sits enthroned across the room from you. She is looking at you. What do you see in her eyes? Amusement? Understanding? Patience?
You may feel like bowing or kneeling before the High Priestess. Do whatever feels right, walking across the floor to stand before her.
Talk to the High Priestess; at this point, you can ask her questions and see what responses you get. Once comfortable in her presence, ask her to draw back the veil, which separates your conscious mind from your sub- or un-conscious. She will rise and pull back the curtain or veil for you. What is behind it? You may see a doorway or perhaps the entrance to a cavern. There may be a passageway or steps going down.
If you are comfortable, allow her to guide you. She will know where you need to go.
At this point, stay with the meditation as long as you want. When you are ready to end the meditation, just retrace your steps, thanking the High Priestess and exiting back through the frame.
After the Meditation
It is important to journal your experience immediately after because the memory may fade rather like a dream when you wake. By writing down your experience you can revisit it before your next meditation, allowing you to go deeper each time.
If you didn’t experience much the first time, don’t worry about it. It took me 5 or 6 practices until my High Priestess felt I was ready to view what was behind the veil! At first, she wasn’t very communicative, encouraging me to silence and quieting my mind. She spoke to me only after allowing me to see what was behind the veil, a cave, sloping down deep into my mind.
Every person may experience something different. Some may just stay in the audience chamber, sitting cross-legged on the floor, working on quieting their minds. Others may go straight through the veil at once. Don’t judge and don’t rush. Enjoy the experience and encourage all of your senses to reach out.
