Last week I talked about the Fool’s Path or Journey and “leveling up”. What does it mean to level up? What do we gain?
What Does Leveling Up Mean

Modern Witch Tarot
Leveling up began as a video game term; you play a round, beat the boss, and start a new level. You leveled up. In gaming, you might gain additional power or protection by leveling up and it is the same for Tarot as well as life.
In Tarot, leveling up means you’ve learned at least part of the lessons you needed. Now you start your path over again, but with the knowledge, wisdom, and maturity that your experiences gave you. While you are going to meet the same types of challenges each time through, you usually do not experience the exact same challenges. I say usually because it is possible to do the bare minimum and still move forward. Relationship and childhood issues both tend to resolve over many, many cycles because so many parts of the issue need addressing.
For example, growing up with parents who always expected you to work things out yourself without help may result in an adult who can’t ask for help or trust others to help them. Learning to ask for help and learning to trust that others will help you if asked can’t be resolved all at once. Perhaps in the first round, you learn that you don’t need to do everything yourself. In the next round, you may learn to ask for help, and in the following round, you learn to let someone help without feeling the need to micromanage them.
Leveling Up Lessons Aren’t Linear

Heaven & Earth Tarot
Most of the time the lessons you learn aren’t linear as I described above. It won’t take three consecutive cycles to resolve issues of asking for help and trusting others. You may finally resolve an issue over ten or thirty cycles, or even never completely resolve them at all! Your subconscious mind guides you to what you need to learn. New issues, complications, and lessons are always popping up to learn to deal with.
The issues with trust and asking for help as described above are just part of all of the lessons we need to learn and internalize in order to become a complete person or your Highest Self. In every journey along the Fool’s Path you’ll learn about dealing with loss, working with others, compassion, endurance, managing your emotions, and understanding your relationship to material goods.
Leveling Up Lessons Aren’t Necessarily Huge Breakthroughs
You won’t sweep away thirty years of negativity or hurt in an instant. Sometimes learning a lesson just means acknowledging a problem exists! Big breakthroughs do occur, but usually the lessons are small and easy to overlook. I try to check my path once a month or so. Sometimes I’ll go straight from the Fool to the World wondering “what did I learn?” By looking at each Major Arcana card with the events of the past month in mind I can usually see how I did indeed pass through the experience of each card. The lessons were so small they didn’t provoke”aha” moments.
Leveling Up is Cumulative

Uncommon Tarot
Learning to ask for help is a skill that spills over into all areas of your life. Similarly, lessons of compassion are learned and used everywhere, from the grocery store checkout line to being a good friend or partner. The form each lesson takes may be particular, but the lesson itself is general.
At times we get stuck in a particular lesson and we actually will feel stuck. You may experience feelings of boredom, frustration, or emptiness. That is why knowing where you are on your own particular path is important. If you feel stuck, knowing where you are and figuring out what you need to do to get moving again can dissolve this block, release those feelings, and result in more energy.
If you are feeling stuck, frustrated, bored, or just want to know where you are on your current path, a Tarot reading may help you. I’m offering a $25 path reading until the end of the month. To receive yours email me at readings@sophrosynetarot.com.mailto:readings@sophrosynetarot.com
What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot
I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.
Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
Will tarot readings help a person “level up”and identify what level they are at at the time of the reading.
I assume it is possible to loose levels as one becomes more of a fool.
Yes. A Reading can show you where you’re at now and possible ways to get moving. Since movement along your path is based on knowledge and maturity it’s as unlikely to go backwards as it is backwards in time. As for knowing your level I don’t think how many levels you’ve gone around matter. There’s no contest or race. Sometimes we fly through a cycle and at other times takes years to move.
I love this post! My favorite part: “Leveling up is cumulative.” I will share in my FB group.
Thank you!
Ciara’s “Level Up” song popped up into my head when reading this. One of my favorite authors, Denise DT, explains how we need to upgrade in every area of our lives. I have been decluttering, manifesting, receiving, and creating my desired life through constant leveling up. The changes and growth are intentional, and have become a fun game, kinda like what you mention in the beginning of this post. Thank you for sharing. Sending lots of love and light. Jaime
