Is the future set in stone? This question is all tied up with the concept of free will and there is a lot of controversy about whether free will even exists. Neurobiologists are questioning this because it appears the brain makes decisions before we even become aware a choice exists. We feel a sense of agency in the outcome because we believe we made the choice, but in fact, we did no such thing.

Added to this is the fact that brain chemistry can alter behavior. I suffer from anxiety and depression due to a chemical imbalance in my brain. I have very little control over that, other than to take medications that sometimes work. It is impossible for me to will myself to have a “normal” brain, just as it is impossible to will myself to instantly heal a broken leg.

While I’m not sure the science supports this, I believe that the future is like a river. Rivers flow from higher to lower. Without radical engineering and pumping mechanisms, the river is never going to flow uphill. Even in a situation such as an earthquake or tidal influence, where the river seems to run backward, it is really just pushing against an obstacle and will resume its flow as soon as it can.

Parts of the Future Are Set in Stone

Is the Future Set in Stone?I believe some parts of the future are set in stone, some are more flexible. We have certain boundaries, certain laws, which apply and we can change the future within those laws. Outside of that we have little power. Examples are everywhere. A child with Down’s Syndrome will not grow up to be a leading nuclear physicist. Someone whose spinal cord is broken at the waist cannot will the cord to heal and walk normally again. If you’ve lost an eye, you will never have that eye back.

These are major physical obstacles for sure, but unfortunately, it runs true even in most situations where things are less cut and dry. An orphan in Lagos, Nigeria who lives on the street can wish and work all she wants, but it is as unlikely she will become a nuclear physicist as the child with Down’s Syndrome. Not impossible, mind you, but the obstacles are just so high it is extremely unlikely. There will always be the one child who, like a flooding river, is able through outside intervention to surmount her obstacles, but the vast majority will continue to flow along.

Miracles

A note about miracles. I do believe in miracles. I have no explanation for them outside of a manifestation of cultural energy that coalesces around a person or situation and alters the aforementioned banks of the river, even making it flow backward for a time. Miracles are uncontrollable. They can’t be wished into being. While energy can be manipulated to improve the odds of a miracle, such as going to a place that has absorbed the energy of millions of worshippers, or focused, concentrated prayer, miracles just happen. When a miracle does happen, it is more like the river jumps its course and creates a whole new course. The river continues to flow downward, it just takes a different path.

So, can you change the future? Is it set in stone or it is yours to create? Within barriers over which you have no control, you can indeed shape your future. The average person who is unhappy can do the work to become happy. Will you win the lottery or inherit a fortune? Probably not, but you can change your expectations, outlook, and career path. That is where Tarot helps you.
