How do you handle negative news from a tarot reading? What about if the response was something you didn’t expect? In this post I’ll explain how I work through my own negative reading.
My Negative News
I drew my tarot card this morning and got the Devil reversed. As I pulled this card for a client a few minutes before, I suspected the cards did not get shuffled well. I put it back, shuffled hard, and returned the Tower, also reversed. Not what I needed or expected on a Monday morning. Note that the Devil comes right before the Tower in the Tarot Major Arcana.

If forced to choose, I prefer the Devil reversed – it suggests letting go of material attachments and limiting beliefs in order to move on. The Tower reversed is all about a major internal change – whether I like it or not! Tarot can be funny that way. If you ignore the message it will come back and practically slap you in the face!
So I’ve received a seemingly negative card, actually two of them. What can I do now?
Turn the Tarot Cards
When reading for clients I like to advise ways to “turn the cards” or put them in a better position. In this case, however, both cards are reversed and the uprights are just as negative as the reversal. So, I don’t want to turn the cards, it is negative news already!
Pull Qualifiers
If this were a client reading there would be more cards and I could tell from them where the changes are coming from. If the cards aren’t clear, I pull additional cards to explore where the change is occurring. I’m pretty sure that I know what this is about, so no additional cards are needed.
Look at the Big Picture
The progression implies I am already moving through this change. There is no feeling of a major personal disaster, but rather a personal transformation that may be uncomfortable and affect me more internally than externally. The Tower gives me a strong feeling of surrender; surrender to the changes, let them flow through until I come out the other side.
One personal issue that is working itself out for me right now – it might refer to that, however, there is another option. I started a new course of study related to meditation and suspect the Tarot is telling me this course will rock my world. In other words, this isn’t really negative news. I’m hoping for the changes and this reading suggests it may be more intense than anticipated. The Tarot encourages me to lean into the change, let it happen. If I do, it will take place faster and easier for me.
Negative News Not So Negative
So, despite being two of the most “scary” cards of the Tarot deck, this is actually good news. My new meditation studies promises change and it appears I’m going to get it.
When you receive a reading that is less than positive, do talk to your Tarot consultant about it. With discussion you might identify where the change will occur, how major it might be, and if there are any cards you can turn to achieve a better result.
What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot
I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.
Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
