What does it mean to craft a better Tarot question? Why is the question so important in a Tarot reading? Follow these easy steps to craft a question that will result in the answer you need!
Why Do I Need to Craft a Better Tarot Question?

Modern Witch Tarot
The question in a Tarot reading is important because the cards are mixed and drawn with that question in mind. Ask a question that is too general and the response from the Tarot will be general and without specific actionable guidance. Too specific and you miss the nuances around the issue or the ability to see all of the choices you may have in the situation.
For example, a general question might be “How can I get rich?” The result is likely to be general guidance like “work hard, be frugal, and collaborate with others”. To craft a better Tarot question I’d suggest the client change it to “What steps do I need to take to achieve an income double what I make now?” or even “What is the first thing I need to do to achieve financial solvency?”.
Tip #1: Ask Open-Ended Questions
Open-ended questions require more than a yes/no answer. Look at these questions:
- Will my partner and I get married?
- What do I need to know about the long-term prospects of my life with my partner?

Gregory Scott Tarot
The first question will return a yes or no answer, likely without additional input. How can you use a response of “yes”? It may keep you in the relationship, but what if the relationship is bad for you and you haven’t realized it yet? Or perhaps moving the relationship to a commitment like marriage isn’t the best thing for your partner? You may marry this person, but there is no indication that the marriage might turn out abusive and a mistake!
The second question takes a look at your relationship as it is now and what it will look like moving forward. I’ve encouraged many clients to use a form of this question for their relationship reading and it is usually enlightening. The Tarot came back once with the suggestion that the partner wasn’t as dedicated to the relationship as the client was. When the client sat down to have the “talk” with their partner it turned out the partner was not as committed to the relationship and preferred an open relationship even if they did marry.
Tip #2: Center the Question on Yourself

Heaven & Earth Tarot
Asking how to change someone else or make someone else do something usually results in negative readings. One of the first readings I did was for a person who wanted to know how they could make their crush love them. I tried my best to craft a better tarot question such as “How can I attract a romantic partner who is best for me?” or “What do I need to know about a future between my interest and myself?” But, no, she wanted to know how to make someone love them.
The answer was not pretty: The Tower (loss and destruction), Death (ego and addiction), and the Three of Hearts (grief, loss, broken-heartedness). It just wasn’t going to happen and the Tarot refused to give an answer. The client was angry, of course, and I almost wished I could warn the object of their crush to warn them!
Tip #3: Ask What Steps You Can Take
Since most people are stuck when they come to me for a consultation, I encourage questions that result in steps you can take. Not steps someone else can take! The only person you can change is yourself, you can’t force someone else to truly change if they don’t want to.

Triple Goddess Tarot
This brings to mind a client who had a sister with mental issues, married to man with issues with whom she had a child. The client lived half a world away from her sister and had been providing financial and emotional support, but the sister refused to take her medications. Her original question was something like “Guide me about my sister’s health in the future and planning her treatment”. This is an open-ended question, but it wouldn’t provide any information or steps that the client could follow herself.
To craft a better Tarot question I turned the question around to steps my client could do herself. What came through was that the client needed to let her sister take care of herself. I remember one specific thing that came through was “You need to take care of your own garden first.” I heard back from the client a year later. She’d stepped back from trying to “fix” her sister, was much happier, and the sister was doing fine without family intervention.
Tip #4: Ask for Help to Craft a Better Tarot Question

Lo Scarabeo Tarot
Tarot consultants craft questions all the time. It’s part of what we do, so lean on your Tarot consultant to help you. You can give a brief background of the issue and articulate what you want to know, such as:
- What choices do I have?
- How can I decide?
- I need to know how I can…?
The Tarot consultant then should have enough information to craft a better Tarot question that will result in information and steps you can actually use to move past, deal with, or change the issue at hand.
I’ve often gone back and forth by email with a client to really pinpoint what the problem really is. One client had just ended a long-term relationship and wanted to know if she’d find love again. I think we had more than a dozen email exchanges before she settled on “What lessons do I need to learn from this relationship in order to attract the perfect relationship for me?” Two years later she let me know that she had taken the advice to heart and was happily involved in a much deeper and more mature relationship that was looking serious.
How To Craft a Better Tarot Question?
To sum up, I encourage you to learn to craft a better Tarot question by:
- asking open-ended questions,
- centering the question on yourself rather than others,
- asking the tarot what steps you can take to effect the change desired, and
- working with your Tarot advisor for help to craft a better Tarot question.
What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot
I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.
Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.
