There are sixteen court cards in the Tarot consisting of Pages, Knights, Kings, and Queens. Today we are going to meet the Queen of Cups, a card that appears frequently for me.

About Court Cards

Queen of Cups

Modern Witch Tarot

Court cards can be read in different ways. Many people, and the classic view, see these cards as representing real people. In my experience, sometimes they are, but more often they represent parts of your own personality, a situation or event, or even a level of maturity that is needed to move forward. What the card means depends on the question, the spread, intent as you draw the cards, and intuition.

About Queens

Queens represent maturity and the deeper understanding of oneself and others that comes with maturity.  They nurture and care for others and teach us to sustainable approaches to life. The key thing with Queens is that they influence rather than act openly. They work behind the scenes and persuade without imposing and can represent ideas and creativity brought to fruition.

The Queen of Cups

Queen of Cups

Heaven & Earth Tarot

The Queen of Cups is the master of emotional flow. Imagine waves on the beach, coming in and out, sometimes higher and with a lot of power, sometimes restrained and calm. In the same way, the Queen of Cups watches and acknowledges emotions, but doesn’t allow them to affect her. Deeply introspective, thoughtful, caring, and compassionate, this Queen holds space for other people’s emotional expressions but doesn’t take on their energy.  She is a great counselor, coach, and healer.

The moon affects our tidal flows, both external in our seas, and internally. The Queen of Cups is in sync with the cycles of the moon and how they affect our emotions. At times she can seem self-absorbed or self-centered, focused on her own inner life rather than those around her.

While she is highly empathetic, she can also be hard to pin down. Hard decision-making isn’t her forte, instead, she’ll tell you to trust your feelings and intuition. This can be frustrating when you aren’t sure what your own feelings are on a matter! The Queen of Cups is good at uncovering motivations, the “why” of the question.

Examples of the Queen of Cups

In the Modern Witch Tarot deck (seen above), the Queen of Cups is very aloof, passive, and, to me, cold. While she is intuitive and creative, she feels very self-centered and lost in her own self. I don’t see this Queen as a very good mother, being more dispassionate and aloof than some other decks.

Queen of Cups

Triple Goddess Tarot

The Queen of Cups in the Heaven & Earth Tarot (see above) feels far more active Queen than the one in the Modern Witch deck. She is manifesting a lobster, the symbol for transformation and rejuvenation, from her cup. A heron (stillness, tranquility) is beside her, an owl (wisdom, silence) is carved onto her throne, and a swan (self-love and beauty) flies above her. Her throne is set in a stormy sea.

In the Triple Goddess Tarot, the Queen of Cups is all about divination and looking within. Is her mouth open in surprise or wonder? Perhaps she is exhorting the image she sees in her scrying. As a side note, I just realized I’ve been neglecting this deck recently! I need to put it back in my regular rotation.

The Queen of Cups in a Reading

I like to envision the different court cards as real people, so who would the Queen of Cups be? Her profession is likely a caregiver or healer, so perhaps a doctor, nurse, counselor, or medical technician. In this guise, I see her as Dr. Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy, though with a better understanding of herself and others! Perhaps an idealized Meredith Grey.

The Queen of Cups might also be found in an art studio or the owner of an atelier. Her works would be very emotional, perhaps like Mary Cassatt or perhaps Georgia O’Keefe. I thought of Frida Kahlo, but she is definitely more of a Queen of Wands, who we will meet later.

There can also be a floaty, dreamy element to the Queen of Cups. You might find her at a commune or living by or on the beach. The only woman I can think of in this context (and I’m not sure why) is Julie Christie

How to Evoke the Queen of Cups

You evoke or manifest the energy of the Queen of Cups by sitting down and having a deep conversation with a good friend. You can also manifest her when you find yourself getting angry. Mental step back and try to understand the complexity of your anger. Meditation is a good way to understand the Queen of Cups, as is working with a therapist. Living in the moment is probably the best way to manifest this strong, emotional energy.

What Clients are Saying about Sophrosyne Tarot

I was advised to ask open-ended questions instead of predictive questions which I thought was helpful because I never would have known if it weren’t for the reader. The reader provided the reading along with some advice too so the entire reading was very thorough and explained in an understandable manner.

Everything said was accurate and helpful for me to identify my flaws in order to grow as a person. I have learned a lot about tarot and what it does to help me.

This was interesting since I like to learn more about personality types, such as using the Enneagram. I am not well versed in Tarot cards, but from this description, I can see some similarities to how I can be.

This is so interesting, I have a Rider-Waite Tarot deck though I haven’t worked with it yet. My decks in regular rotation are all Oracle.

I’m excited to read more about the Tarot here, what an incredibly detailed and informative blog!
